What Causes
Gum Disease
Gum disease starts with plaque, the sticky film of bacteria that builds up on teeth every day. When plaque is not cleaned away, it hardens into tartar that only a professional cleaning can remove, and the bacteria it holds irritate and infect the gums. Several things raise your risk beyond plaque alone:

Gum disease is an infection of the gums and the bone that holds your teeth, and it moves through two main stages.
- Gingivitis, the early stage

- Periodontitis, when the bone is affected
Gums pull away from the teeth and form pockets that collect bacteria and wear down the bone. Teeth may look longer, feel loose or shift, changing how your bite fits together.

What does Edmonton gum disease treatment involve?
Treatment starts with a thorough evaluation of your gums and supporting tissues, including how deep the pockets around each tooth are. Depending on the stage, your Edmonton gum disease treatment plan may include scaling and root planing, diode laser care, pocket reduction surgery, gum grafting or regenerative procedures, followed by regular maintenance visits.
What happens at my first visit?
Plan on 60 to 90 minutes. We review your health history, photograph your teeth and face, check your existing dental work, measure your gums and assess your bite. If you need X-rays or a 3D scan, we explain why first, since those are billed separately. Your options come at a follow-up consultation. Learn what to expect.
What if I feel anxious about treatment?
You’re not alone. We explain every step before we begin and numb the area well, and IV or oral sedation is available for longer procedures. You can also ask for a blanket, a warm towelette, an eye mask or headphones with Netflix or Spotify, so you feel supported and in control.
How much does gum disease treatment cost?
Costs vary with the stage and the number of areas we treat, so we don’t quote a price before your exam. After your consultation, you’ll get a written estimate. Your dental insurance may cover part of your periodontal care, and 0% financing for up to 24 months through Beautifi can spread out the rest.
Can gum disease be reversed?
Gingivitis, the early stage, can often be reversed with a professional cleaning and better daily care. Once periodontitis has damaged the bone, treatment controls the infection and can rebuild some lost support, but the disease needs ongoing care. At our Edmonton office, maintenance visits every three to four months help keep it from returning.
