Maybe a tooth feels loose, or you're wondering if your jaw can hold an implant. An Edmonton periodontist at Vivid Specialized Dentistry can check your gums and bone and explain your options.
What does a periodontist do, and when should you see one?
A periodontist is a dental specialist who treats the gums and jawbone that support your teeth and places dental implants. You might see one for:
- Gum concerns or recession: gums that bleed or pull back.
- Long-standing discomfort: soreness that keeps returning.
- Missing or failing teeth: a bone check before an implant.
- Dental work that no longer feels right: sore gums around a crown or implant.

Frequently asked questions
We numb the area with local anaesthetic, so you'll likely feel pressure rather than pain. If you're anxious or need a longer procedure, you can choose oral sedation or IV sedation. Our comfort menu adds drinks and snacks, warm towelettes, blankets, support pillows, eye masks, and headphones with Netflix or Spotify.
Cost depends on the treatment and how many areas need care. You'll get a written estimate at your consultation. We offer 0% financing for up to 24 months and longer plans through Beautifi, and we work with Sun Life Financial, Canada Life, Alberta Blue Cross, Green Shield Canada, and the Canadian Dental Care Plan.
Plan on 60 to 90 minutes while we review your health history, photograph your teeth and face, check existing dental work, and assess your gums and bite. We take CBCT scans or X-rays only when needed and bill them separately. At a follow-up consultation, we explain your options, with no pressure to proceed.
Healing depends on the treatment, and your Edmonton periodontist gives you a timeline first. Gums are often tender for a few days after a deep cleaning, while grafts and pocket reduction surgery call for soft foods as you heal. A bone graft may need a few months before an implant goes in.
Often, yes. Your periodontist first brings the gum disease under control, then checks whether your jaw has enough bone and rebuilds it with grafting if needed. Your prosthodontist plans the new teeth alongside that work in our Edmonton office, and your periodontist places the implant once the site is ready.
