How Dentures Compare to a Bridge or an Implant

Dentures are the most accessible way to replace a full arch, and for a lot of people they are the right answer. If you are weighing them against something fixed, these are the differences that show up day to day.

How it stays in	Suction, and a partial clasps onto remaining teeth. Comes out at night.	Fused to the jawbone. Never removed.	Cemented onto the teeth on either side of the gap.
Day to day	Take it out to clean and soak it overnight, and some foods can be difficult.	Brush and floss it like a natural tooth.	Brush normally, plus a threader or water flosser to clean underneath.

Caring for

Your Dentures

A denture that is looked after well fits better, lasts longer, and is far more comfortable day to day. The routine is simple.

Every day

Take your denture out and brush it over a folded towel or a basin of water, so it survives if you drop it. Use a soft brush and a denture cleaner rather than regular toothpaste, because the abrasives in toothpaste scratch the acrylic and those scratches hold stain and bacteria. Rinse your mouth and gently brush your gums, tongue, and palate before the denture goes back in.

Overnight

Leave the denture out while you sleep and soak it in water or a denture solution. Your gums need the rest, and acrylic warps if it dries out.

What not to use

Hot or boiling water will warp the fit permanently. Whitening toothpaste, bleach, and household cleaners damage the acrylic and the gum-toned base. Stiff-bristled brushes scratch the surface.

Relines and remakes

Your jaw keeps changing shape after tooth loss, so a denture that fit perfectly will loosen over time. A reline refits the surface of the denture to your gums and usually restores comfort without a new denture. Most dentures last 5 to 7 years before a remake makes more sense than another reline.

When to call us

Call if the denture rubs or leaves a sore spot, if it clicks or slips when you talk or eat, if a tooth or the base cracks, or if your bite feels uneven. Please do not file or glue a denture yourself. A chairside adjustment takes minutes, and a home repair usually costs you the denture.

How do I care for my dentures?
