What Are Removable Implant-Supported Dentures?
A More Secure, Alternative to Traditional Dentures
Removable implant-supported dentures—also known as implant-retained dentures, overdentures, or snap-on dentures—offer a stable and comfortable alternative to traditional dentures. These dentures are designed to attach securely to dental implants, providing superior retention and functionality while remaining removable for easy cleaning and maintenance.
At VIVID Prosthodontics, we specialize in creating high-quality implant-supported dentures that restore confidence in your smile and allow you to eat, speak, and live comfortably.

Other Names for Removable Implant-Supported Dentures
Removable implant-supported dentures are known by several different names. If you've heard these terms before, they all refer to the same type of secure, implant-retained denture solution:
Snap-on dentures | Implant-retained dentures | Overdentures | Clip-on dentures | Locator-retained dentures | Bar-retained dentures
Key Benefits of Removable Implant-Supported Dentures
-
Enhanced Stability: Unlike conventional dentures, implant-supported dentures do not rely solely on suction or adhesives. Instead, they are anchored to two to six dental implants, significantly improving retention and preventing movement.
-
Improved Comfort: With a more secure fit, these dentures reduce gum irritation and discomfort, allowing for a more natural feel compared to traditional options.
-
Increased Bite Force: Implant-supported dentures provide greater chewing efficiency, allowing you to enjoy a wider variety of foods without worry.
-
Easy Maintenance: These dentures can be removed for daily cleaning, making oral hygiene simple while also allowing easy access for cleaning around the implants themselves.
-
Preserving Jawbone Health: Dental implants help prevent bone loss by stimulating the jawbone, maintaining facial structure, and reducing the sunken appearance often associated with missing teeth.
At VIVID Prosthodontics, we prioritize creating dentures that not only fit well but also look natural and feel comfortable. Our in-house dental laboratory ensures precision and quality throughout the process. At VIVID you can trust that your dentures are designed with precision, backed by advanced dental technology, and customized for long-lasting confidence.

Caring for Your Removable Dentures
Maintaining proper hygiene is vital to the success of removable implant-supported prosthesis, helping them to last longer and function properly. Similar to natural teeth, dental plaque will also form on the surface of an overdenture and around the dental implants. Your prosthesis should be taken out daily for cleaning. The following steps will allow your removable denture to last as long as possible.
-
Daily Cleaning: Remove your dentures and gently brush them with a soft-bristle toothbrush and non-abrasive denture cleaner.
-
Clean Your Implants: Use an interdental brush or water flosser to remove plaque and food particles around the implants.
-
Regular Check-Ups: Visit our office every 4 to 12 months for professional cleanings and to replace worn-out attachments as needed.
-
Monitor Fit & Comfort: If your denture feels loose or uncomfortable, schedule an appointment for an adjustment.
Inserts & Abutments
The retentive inserts provide retention to your denture. These attachments will require replacement every 4-6 months.
Implant abutments require replacement at 4-8 year intervals. Regular hygiene & maintenance visits ensure the safety and performance of your prosthetics, helping to prevent issues before they arise.

Why Implant-Supported Dentures?
Removable implant-supported dentures provide significant advantages over traditional dentures. Unlike conventional complete dentures, these implant-supported prostheses eliminate the need for adhesives, offering a more secure and comfortable fit.
Each implant contact point enhances the retention of the prosthesis, ensuring the prosthesis remains stable during activities such as eating and speaking. Regular annual examinations with Dr. Sumar ensure your dentures and implants remain in optimal condition, with adjustments made as required to maintain your comfort and oral health.

The Removable Denture Process
1. Consultation & Treatment Planning
We begin with a comprehensive assessment to determine your eligibility for implant-supported dentures. This includes a thorough evaluation of your bone density, gum health, and overall oral condition.
2. Implant Placement
Using a custom-designed surgical guide, dental implants are placed in precise locations to provide maximum support. These implants serve as the foundation for your new dentures.
3. Healing & Temporary Denture Use
A healing period of several months is required for the implants to integrate with the jawbone. During this phase, a temporary denture may be used to maintain function and aesthetics.
4. Fabrication of Your Custom Denture
Once the implants have fully integrated, we design and fabricate a high-quality, custom-fitted denture that securely snaps onto the implant abutments.
5. Final Adjustments & Long-Term Care
After placement, we make necessary adjustments to ensure an ideal fit and optimal function. Over time, attachments (locator caps) inside the denture may need replacement due to normal wear and tear.
How much do Removable Dentures Cost?
The cost of removable implant-supported dentures varies depending on factors such as the number of implants required and the complexity of the case. Because every patient’s needs are unique, we recommend scheduling a consultation at VIVID Prosthodontics for a personalized treatment plan and detailed pricing.

Denture Relines
KEEPING YOUR DENTURES SECURE & COMFORTABLE

Relines are required for permanent and interim dentures. There are many reasons that constitute a reline with the most common reason being bone resorption. Bone resorption is caused by the normal process of aging or after natural teeth have been extracted. The procedure re-fits the surface of a denture to the tissues of the mouth. This is done by placing a new acrylic base into the denture along the healing oral structures of the mouth. A reline will bring back comfort and stability while discouraging food from going under the denture.
These are the two most common types of relines:
-
A soft/hard chairside reline: This reline is often used on uncomfortable dentures that are difficult to wear. It provides extra comfort when the fit of the denture has changed.
-
Lab processed reline: Similar to a chairside reline, however the acrylic is processed labside and produces a harder, less porous material. This is ideal for denture teeth that are still in good condition but the denture no longer fits well. A rebase is performed to improve the retention and comfort of the denture.

Frequently Asked Questions about Removable Dentures
Yes. Implant-supported dentures provide a much stronger and more stable bite compared to traditional dentures, allowing you to eat a wider variety of foods with confidence. While there may be a short adjustment period, most patients become comfortable eating with their new dentures within a couple of weeks.
To make the transition easier, we recommend:
-
Cutting food into bite-sized pieces.
-
Chewing slowly and evenly on both sides of the mouth.
-
Being mindful of foods with small particles (like seeds or chewy meats) that may get caught under the denture.
If food does get trapped, a simple swish of water can help dislodge it. With time, eating with implant-supported dentures will feel natural, giving you the freedom to enjoy your favorite meals without worry.
