Interim Dentures

What are Interim Dentures?

A temporary solution for form and function

Interim dentures, also known as immediate dentures, provide a temporary solution after tooth extractions.

They allow you to maintain your smile, eat comfortably, and speak clearly while your gums heal. At VIVID Prosthodontics, we create high-quality interim dentures tailored to your needs, ensuring a smooth transition to your permanent solution.

What are the Key Benefits of Interim Dentures?

For patients Interim dentures offer the following key benefits:

  • Immediate Functionality: Eat and speak with confidence right after your procedure.

  • Aesthetic Support: Maintain your facial structure and appearance.

  • Smooth Transition: Avoid the discomfort of living without teeth during the healing process.

For the clinic, interim dentures allow us to evaluate the color, positioning, and occlusion before we build the final prosthesis.

At VIVID Prosthodontics, we prioritize creating dentures that not only fit well but also look natural and feel comfortable. Our in-house dental laboratory ensures precision and quality throughout the process.

An interim denture is more than a temporary fix—it’s your smile and function for 3 to 12 months while your gums and bone heal. At VIVID Prosthodontics, we ensure your interim dentures provide the comfort, aesthetics, and confidence you need during this transitional time. With our specialized expertise, you can trust that your smile is in good hands.

Caring for Your Interim Dentures

Follow these tips to keep your dentures clean and comfortable:

  • Daily Cleaning: Gently brush your interim dentures and rinse with mouthwash or saline solutions.

  • Protect Healing Sites: If you are experiencing any sore spots at the surgical sites,  it is important to contact our office to schedule an adjustment to your interim dentures.  Revisions and readjustments may be required over time as the natural structure of your mouth changes or if you have had dental implant surgery.

How Long Will I Need Interim Dentures?

Interim dentures are a temporary step, typically used between 3 to 12 months. Once your gums and jaw have healed and stabilized, we will craft your final dentures or implant-supported solution, ensuring an ideal fit and natural look.

Why Interim Dentures?

The purpose of an interim denture is to maintain function and aesthetics during the healing phase. While we strive for an ideal fit, as bone & tissue remodel it may be necessary to place a soft liner for comfort & function. Your interim denture will require adjustments & relines, this may need to be done multiple times. Readjustments of the bite may also be required throughout the healing phase.

How much do Interim Dentures cost?

The cost of interim dentures varies depending on your unique needs. Some patients may only require an interim partial denture, while others may need more comprehensive solutions.

Because this is an invaluable step in restoring your smile and function, we recommend a personalized consultation to assess your situation and provide accurate pricing. At VIVID Prosthodontics, we tailor every plan to fit your needs and goals.

Denture Relines

Denture Reline - GIF - V5.gif

Relines are required for permanent and interim dentures. There are many reasons that constitute a reline with the most common reason being bone resorption. Bone resorption is caused by the normal process of aging or after natural teeth have been extracted. The procedure re-fits the surface of a denture to the tissues of the mouth. This is done by placing a new acrylic base into the denture along the healing oral structures of the mouth. A reline will bring back comfort and stability while discouraging food from going under the denture.

These are the two most common types of relines:

  • A soft/hard chairside reline: This reline is often used on uncomfortable dentures that are difficult to wear. It provides extra comfort when the fit of the denture has changed.

  • Lab processed reline:  Similar to a chairside reline, however the acrylic is processed labside and produces a harder, less porous material. This is ideal for denture teeth that are still in good condition but the denture no longer fits well. A rebase is performed to improve the retention and comfort of the denture.

Frequently Asked Questions about Interim Dentures

  • Interim Denture Example Close Upin Edmonton.jpg

Interim dentures are designed to provide a natural appearance and restore your smile immediately after tooth extractions. They are crafted to look as natural as possible, allowing you to feel confident during the transition period.

  • Interim dentures are a temporary solution and are typically used for 6 to 12 months while your gums and bone heal. This healing period allows your dentist to monitor changes and prepare your final, more precise prosthesis. Regular adjustments or relining may be necessary to ensure comfort during this time.

  • The cost of interim dentures varies depending on your unique needs. Some patients may only require a partial denture, while others may need more comprehensive solutions.

Because this is an invaluable step in restoring your smile and function, we recommend a personalized consultation to assess your situation and provide accurate pricing. At VIVID Prosthodontics, we tailor every plan to fit your needs and goals.

To get an accurate estimate tailored to your needs, we recommend booking a consultation. During this appointment, we’ll guide you through the process, discuss your options, and provide a detailed quote based on your unique requirements.

  • Interim dentures are made to help you eat and function while you wait for your final dentures. While it may take some time to adjust, most patients can eat soft foods comfortably. Over time, you can reintroduce more variety into your diet. Avoid extremely hard, sticky, or chewy foods, as they may cause discomfort or dislodge the dentures.

  • You may need an adjustment or relining if you experience any of the following:

    • Looseness or instability: Your dentures don’t stay in place as well as they used to.

    • Sore spots or discomfort: Persistent irritation or pressure points may indicate a poor fit.

    • Changes in speech or chewing: Difficulty speaking or eating could signal the need for an adjustment.

Regular checkups (we recommend annually) allow us to assess the fit and make necessary modifications to ensure your dentures remain comfortable and effective.

  • In short: Yes, all patients will need interim dentures.

Interim dentures are recommended to ensure you aren’t left without teeth during the healing period after extractions. They provide immediate function and appearance, helping you maintain your ability to eat, speak, and smile confidently.

Interim dentures also help preserve the vertical dimension of occlusion—how your teeth align when you bite. This is critical for proper function and speech and serves as a guide for setting the teeth in your final prosthesis. Without interim dentures, you may experience challenges in these areas, and your jaw and gums could heal in ways that make fitting the final prosthesis more difficult.

While waiting without teeth may seem like an option, interim dentures offer a smoother transition, improved comfort, and better long-term results for your final prosthesis.

The Interim Denture Process

1. Custom Impressions:

Before your dental extractions, we take impressions of your teeth and gums as well as a custom shade for the future denture teeth. These diagnostic records are then used to craft your interim dentures.

2. Placement After Extractions:

Once your teeth have been extracted, the oral surgeon or periodontist will inform you as to whether or not you are able to wear your interim dentures immediately post surgery. Most patients will begin eating with their new dentures the very same day.

3. Adjustments for Comfort:

While we strive for an ideal fit, as bone & tissue remodel it may be necessary to place a soft liner for comfort & function. Your interim denture will require adjustments & relines, this may need to be done multiple times. Readjustments of the bite may also be required throughout the healing phase.
